Tree and moon

There is an ancient story about a tree that fell in love with the moon.

He sang her songs praising her beauty, he called to her by names of magic and splendor, he grew his branches as high as he could so that he might reach her. He even colored his leaves white instead of green in honor of her and slept in the daytime so that he would be awake at night with his love.

And she?

Smiling, she shone her silver light upon him.

For she was celestial, eternal, of the stars… and he was of the earth.

So she couldn't give herself to him (even if she wanted to), but she could and she did give him her kindness.
